Reminder of the regulatory context

Sovereign Order no.6.251 of 20 January 2017 on waste and Ministerial Order no.2017-38 of 20 January 2017 regulating the collection and treatment of waste and its annexes fix in particular:

  • Priority given to waste recovery through reuse, recycling or any other ecologically appropriate process.
  • The obligation to present waste for collection in appropriate containers.
  • The obligation to have premises in which to store waste containers after they have been collected.

Selective collection : (Yellow and green) household recycling bins are collected by sector once a week, during the day, between 5:00 and 12:00 for yellow bins and between 9:00 and 17:00 for green bins.

The recycling bin allocation sheet in Annex II to the Ministerial Order can be used to estimate the volume of bins required for a weekly collection.

The SMA may, however, carry out additional collections as part of its private collection services.

When the recycling bins are collected, a visual check is carried out by the collection staff. Errors in sorting may lead to collection being refused. The improperly sorted bin is then taped up by the SMA staff, with a note explaining the reason for the refusal. The bin will then be emptied at the next non-recyclable household waste collection.

Supply of recycling bins:

To encourage all residences to recycle, the Government of Monaco is providing yellow and green bins free of charge. The SMA’s team of of Waste Prevention and Recycling Officers SMAsupports and advises anyone who needs help setting up their sorting bins. For any requests for bins, contact the freephone number : 8000 20 40 (free call).
